Michael Eric Dyson, in an article for CNN.com, offers a myriad of excuses for the appalling figures above. Dyson even goes as far as proposing skin tone as a contributing factor for his brother Everett’s incarceration (Dyson is lighter skinned and his brother is darker skinned). I can only imagine that she looked at him, faced slightly tilted in an attempt to keep the tears from falling as she told him what she herself wanted to believe so badly. “You can be anything you want to be“.

Since he was 4 years old, my youngest son has openly declared to anyone who will listen that one day he will be President of the United States. If you know Eric, who at the age of 7 reads his 14 year old sister’s books, you’re not surprised that he has already mapped out a plan to attend Harvard law school on a full scholarship. A very likable child with impressive intellect, one immediately realizes upon meeting Eric that nothing should hold him back in his quest for the Oval Office. How then, as a mother, do you tell him that a genetic disease, one he had no control over acquiring, will most certainly be thrown in his face as works towards his dream? Read more »
