Daily Dilemmas of Single Motherhood
It’s 7 am on a Wednesday morning. I have an important meeting at 9am, a meeting I’ve been trying to schedule for quite some time. Wake up, jump in the shower and there is a knock at the door. My 7 year old has a stomach ache. I have 2 options. I can 1) try to reschedule the meeting, realizing that it will probably be another month before we find a date that works 2) I can perform a single momma “quick fix.” What’s a “quick fix?” It’s when you get the child well enough to make it to school and pray the school nurse calls after the meeting. The stomach ache quick fix consists of the following steps (note: the usual remedy, telling the child to “take a nap,” is not an option):
1) Check for a fever. No, not with a thermometer–you just place your hand on the child’s forehead. Still unsure, put your lips against the forehead. In this instance, he feels slightly warm but I conclude it’s just a result of an elevated body temperature while sleeping (no, I don’t have any scientific basis for this). In a recent interview, in fact in many interviews that just happened to take place during his impeachment trial, governor Rod Blagojevich stated that his comments were “taken out of context.” Here are a few of those comments:
