Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)
A rare disorder in which histiocytes and lymphocytes (types of white blood cells) build up in organs including the skin, spleen, and liver, and destroy other blood cells. HLH may be inherited or caused by certain conditions or diseases, including infections, immunodeficiency (inability of the body to fight infections), and cancer.
I can’t even pronounce it and somehow HLH has managed to affect my family in a very big way. Some time ago, one of my younger cousins (we’ll call him “T”) got sick and received a diagnosis of HLH. We weren’t sure what it really was except that it was a blood disorder. My son has sickle cell so I assumed it was something like that. That is until the Make a Wish Foundation sent T to Walt Disney World. Wait, they only send sick kids there, right? What I hadn’t realized was that T was sick and it was further confirmed when he started chemotherapy. Wait, chemo is only for really sick people, right? Still, we’re Thurmans and we take everything in stride. T didn’t act like a sick person. He seemed pretty tired sometimes but there he was, at home, with his family. He was fine. He is fine.
