It Ain’t Over ‘Til Rihanna Sings
I’m not sure what she was wearing. I’m not even sure I followed what she was saying. Fact is, Rihanna’s performance at this year’s American Music Awards show wasn’t really about either of those things. The essence of her performance was captured in her final pose– it was about a young woman who, one year after publicly dealing with domestic violence, was still standing strong. Rihanna was faced with many choices after Chris Brown attacked her last year. She could go back to him (and she did briefly) or she could leave him (which she ultimately did). She could retreat privately (and she did briefly) and let her career fall to the wayside or she could do what many artists do and use that emotion to inspire her next album (which she ultimately did).
In her interview with Diane Sawyer, Rihanna said that her choice to leave Brown was about her young female fans. She said that she needed to let them know that it was not okay to stay in an abusive relationship. Tonight, Rihanna gave her young fans another lesson. She taught them that even in the face of adversity, you have a choice and even if you don’t initially make the right choice you can learn from that and move on.
